Know which ads actually get you booked: UTM tracking for bookings
Spending on Google or Meta ads but can't tell which ones produce real bookings? UTM tags close the loop between a click and a confirmed appointment.
Running ads without tracking is like pouring water and not watching where it goes. You see the spend leave your account; you don't see which campaign, ad or keyword actually produced a paying booking. UTM tracking fixes that — it tags your links so every booking can be traced back to exactly what sent it.
What a UTM actually is
A UTM is just a few labels added to the end of a link. A tagged booking link might carry utm_source=google, utm_medium=cpc, utm_campaign=spring-offer. When someone clicks and books, those labels travel with them — so your analytics can say "this booking came from the spring-offer Google campaign," not just "a booking happened."
Why it matters for a service business
Most owners running ads can tell you what they spent. Far fewer can tell you which half worked. UTMs let you answer the questions that actually control profit:
- Which campaign brings bookings, not just clicks?
- Is Google or Meta cheaper per booking (not per click)?
- Which offer or audience converts best?
Once you can see that, you stop funding the ads that look busy and double down on the ones that fill the diary.
The key: track bookings, not just visits
Lots of tools track website visits. The number that matters is bookings — the click that became a confirmed, paying appointment. When your booking links carry UTMs, the booking itself inherits the campaign data, so you measure the thing you actually care about, all the way down to the appointment.
Keep it tidy
A little discipline pays off: use consistent, lower-case labels (spring-offer, not Spring Offer one week and spring_promo the next). Messy tags produce messy reports. Decide a naming pattern once and stick to it, and your numbers stay readable as you scale campaigns.
Where to start
Tag the links in your current ads with source, medium and campaign. Run them a fortnight. Then look at cost per booking by campaign — the winners and losers are usually obvious, and the first look almost always changes where you spend.
