Collect payments at booking with Stripe or PayPal

Chasing invoices and taking payment "on the day" leaks money. Taking it at the moment of booking protects your time and ends the awkward follow-ups.

There's a quiet tax on booking "pay on the day" or "I'll invoice you after": the money you don't collect. The client who cancels last minute. The invoice that goes unpaid for three weeks. The awkward chase. Collecting at the point of booking removes all of it — the commitment and the cash happen in the same moment.

Full payment or deposit?

Both have their place:

  • Full payment at booking suits fixed-price, online or one-off services — a consultation, a class seat, a session. The client pays, the booking is confirmed, done.
  • A deposit suits higher-value or in-person services where the balance is paid on completion. [It secures the slot and filters out no-shows](/blog/deposits-stop-no-shows) without asking for the whole amount upfront.

The rule of thumb: if skipping would cost you a lot, take money at booking. If first contact needs to feel easy, keep it deposit-only or free.

Why it beats invoicing

Invoicing after the fact assumes goodwill and good memory — two things you can't bank on. Payment at booking means:

  • No chasing. The money's in before the service happens.
  • Fewer no-shows. People turn up to what they've paid for.
  • Cleaner cashflow. You're paid in advance, not thirty days late.
  • A more professional feel. One smooth step instead of a follow-up dance.

Keep the checkout inside the booking

The win disappears if paying means a separate link, a bank transfer, or a second app. Payment should be a step inside the booking flow — pick a time, enter details, pay, confirmed — with Stripe or PayPal handling the card securely and the client never leaving the page.

A note on refunds and policy

Decide your cancellation terms up front and state them at booking: fully refundable up to X hours before, deposit forfeited after that, or whatever fits your business. Clear terms, shown before payment, prevent disputes and make people comfortable paying in the first place.

Where to start

Connect Stripe or PayPal, turn on payment for your most commonly-skipped or highest-value service, and set a clear refund window. The invoice-chasing stops almost immediately.
